Shortly
after passing the inlet we turned west into a channel
to the Sebastian River. We passed under the bridge
for US-1 and the railroad trestle.
In the 1800's Henry Flagler purchased
and merged several railway companies to create the Florida
East Coast Railroad, which runs from Jacksonville to Miami.
At one time the railway was extended
all the way to Key West. Named "Flaglers Folly",
that portion of the track was destroyed by a hurricane.
As
we head down the river we see large, luxurious homes
scattered through lush, natural vegetation. The
scenery was often just river and sky and trees, but every
now and then we would see a few houses in a group. Most
of the homes have docks and boathouses and lots and lots
of screenrooms.
Ospreys
like to sit in the branches of tall, dead trees to
take advantage of the view.There
were a lot of osprey and many great blue herons around.
The tourists were all very excited that in spite of
the cool weather they got to see an alligator sunning
himself.
