...
the lead airboat was sunk in the trail ahead of us! Our
driver took his foot off the gas
and headed for a tree to stop the boat.
The classic "Well,
shucks " headscratch.
As
they brought their stuff over from the sunk boat the
men told us what had happened. When they came around
the corner they hit something in the trail that hadn't
been there before...and it hit back!
The prop cage was
knocked into a tree branch which caught it and jerked the
boat to a sudden stop. The driver immediately shut the
engine down to minimize damage to the prop or engine.
Tom, riding on the
foot rest, was impelled forward both by the sudden
stop of the boat and thoughts
of a shattered propeller. As he flew face first
into the trail (in company with whatever
had hit them!) he was partially run into the muck by the
boat he had just left.
Tom
is over 6 ft. tall and had to wade in water up to his armpits
to hand his wallet over to Sammie.
To
this day he cannot understand how the water was so deep
on him but neither of the airboaters (both under 6 ft.)
got wet higher than mid-thigh!
They said "It's
just a matter of knowing where to step."
